Volunteering at Syros Cats – Susan’s story

A member of our current crew, Susan, shares her experiences of volunteering at Syros Cats and why she is back for a second time!

This is my second time here volunteering with Syros Cats. My experience the first time was so rewarding I just knew I wanted to come back. This time has been even better! One of the most appealing aspects of my experience is the opportunity to bond with the cats. Each one has a unique personality, from the playful kittens to the wise old tomcats. There is something truly special about witnessing their transformation physically as they receive love and care and it’s heart-warming to see some real bruisers transform into trusting and affectionate creatures.

The island itself? Syros is a fascinating island that offers a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Mountains, amazing beaches, picturesque villages, crystal-clear waters, good food, and various festivals and events throughout the year attract visitors from around the world. It is the perfect backdrop for my volunteer experience.

As you can imagine, volunteering at Syros Cats is not without its challenges. The workload can be demanding, the temperature can be red hot or bitterly cold, and you sometimes have to see and deal with things relating to cat welfare that you would prefer not to. There have been days when I could have been overwhelmed, but the satisfaction of knowing I was making a difference is so huge that this kept me going. One of the biggest challenges I face is the language barrier. While all of the volunteers and staff speak English, it is helpful to have a basic understanding of Greek. This is particularly important when communicating with local vets or seeking assistance from the community. My personal winter project is improving my ability to speak Greek!

Despite the challenges, I wouldn’t trade this experience for the world. I have learned so much about animal care, time management, and adaptability. I also have the opportunity to get to know fellow volunteers from other countries and backgrounds and hear about their culture. It is great to be working in a team of people who all share the same values and passion about the cats here.

If you’re considering volunteering at Syros Cats, I highly recommend it. It’s a truly rewarding experience that will leave you with unforgettable memories. Just be prepared for hard work, cultural differences, and potential language barriers. But most importantly, be prepared to open your heart to the furry friends who will (I guarantee this) steal it.
