Electra’s Story
TNR isn’t just about sterilisation. We also look at each cat’s general health and where needed, we give or arrange further medical treatment before they are released. Such treatment might be care of wounds, dental work or parasite treatment. The condition of one cat we came across recently was quite heartbreaking, driving home the harsh reality of the life of an unsterilised female stray.
Meet Electra
Electra had been living close to a taverna along with other strays and was first brought to our attention by one of our supporters, a regular visitor to Syros. This sweet cat was thin and completely exhausted from feeding two litters of kittens at the same time. The physical toll was all-too evident as her kittens were practically as big as she was. She must have come into season very soon after giving birth to her first litter – an all-too-common scenario. We also found that she was suffering from a severe fungal infection. She had simply given her all to raise her two litters.

So, having confirmed that her kittens were by then feeding independently and old enough to leave their mother, we decided to bring Electra to Syros Cats, primarily to treat her for the fungal infection but also to give her body the chance to recover. She’s been with us for two months now, and the transformation is remarkable. She has probably doubled in weight since her arrival and has decided that she rather likes being at Syros Cats and has joined our happy colony here! We know that Electra, now sterilised and with a clean bill of health, has a happier life ahead of her.
The staff at the taverna are happy for us to continue our TNR work at the colony there. Electra’s kittens will be first on the list for sterilisation as soon as they are old enough. An endless cycle is finally broken.
