2025 In Stats!

Though our cats are always much more than numbers to us, sometimes those numbers help tell an important story.
It’s been a busy and productive year, so Jacky has put together a snapshot of how your generous donations, alongside support from sponsors, visitors and partner charities, have helped shape our work over the past 12 months.

As always, unsterilised cats remain at the root of many of the challenges we face. For that reason, our Trap, Neuter and Release (TNR) work continues to be a top priority. Colonies with uncontrolled breeding often suffer from high levels of disease, malnutrition and injury, with kittens especially vulnerable. These are the cats we are most often called upon to help.
Carrying out TNR is not always straightforward. It requires time, patience and careful coordination with local feeders who know the colonies well. Cats must be trapped at the right time, transported safely, monitored after surgery and, where possible, returned to their familiar surroundings once recovered. Some, of course, require longer-term care.

In 2025, we sterilised 403 cats across the island, a significant achievement made possible by the dedication of our volunteers and the invaluable help of local people who alerted us to colonies in need.

Rehoming on the island itself remains extremely difficult, as many residents already care for multiple cats. However, thanks to our network of supporters abroad, 26 cats found loving homes overseas last year.

We also carried out 52 kitten vaccinations, along with microchipping, rabies vaccinations and passports for those travelling to new homes. And, as ever, the battle against fleas and ticks continues!

Behind all of this is a small but committed team, a paid manager supported by long-term helpers and a rotating group of international volunteers. In 2025 alone, we received hundreds of applications for just a limited number of placements, with many volunteers returning to help again.

We are also grateful for the support of local authorities and partner organisations, including Animal Action, the Greek Cat Welfare Society and Syros Cats UK, all of whom contribute to our ongoing work.

Our focus remains on building a sustainable, community-led approach to cat care on the island. By supporting a growing network of local Cat Guardians with training, equipment and food, we are seeing real progress in managing colonies more effectively.

A big thank you to June, Hanna, our Swedish supporters and contributing photographers for their work in designing and distributing our 2026 calendars. And of course, to all our supporters who bought them!

As always, none of this would be possible without your support. Thank you for helping us continue this work, the cats of Syros truly benefit from it every day.
